Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader offers guidance and support in the discipline assigned (as per position title). SI Leader will meet with students on a daily basis and assist with SI sessions, tutoring, supplemental resources, independent projects, assignments, lab activities, program workshops, etc. The SI Leader will also attend courses to facilitate discussion groups/sessions and other activities on a weekly basis. This position reports directly to the Project/Supplemental Instruction Coordinator and the Project Director of the Title V: Building Scholars Grant.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serves as a student mentor/tutor for LCC students during each semester in subject area assigned.
2. Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact with course faculty member.
3. Assist students by conducting group discussions and sessions.
4. Assists in the recruitment and marketing of Title V Building Scholar’s participants (and SI Leader positions) and Title V Building Scholars activities.
5. Provides innovative techniques to reinforce concepts and guide students to appropriate supplemental material for added explanations.
6. Attend all required meetings and trainings.
7. Maintains logs while keeping students’ confidentiality.
8. Performs other duties as assigned by the Project/SI Coordinator Advocate and Project Director.

Required Qualifications

Students with an A in College Algebra or higher level math.

Preferred Qualifications

Tutoring or mentoring experience .
Recommendation letter from instructor(s) or discipline area as per position title.

Prerequisite for employment:
• Strong academic record with a GPA of 3.0
• Knowledge of LCC resources
• Upperclassman or graduate standing preferred
• Ability to work well with others

Physical Demands

Walking, standing, lifting, carrying, and bending. Required to lift items weighing 20 pounds. Clear speech for modeling with students.

Supervision Exercised

None.

Work Environment

Inside work in a well-lighted and air conditioned area most of the time.

Required to work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
